The Seventh International Symposium on Roman Law, Chinese Law and the Codification of Civil Law was held on Haidian Campus on 21-22 Sept, 2024. It was co-hosted by CUPL, the University of Rome "La Sapienza", the University of Rome "Tor Vergata", the Observatory on the Codification and Training of the Jurist in China in the Framework of the Roman Legal System, the College of Comparative Law of CUPL, the Civil, Commercial, and Economic Law School (CCELS) of CUPL and the Beijing Debt Law Society, and co-organised by the Institute of Sino-Italian Law and Roman Law of the College and the Centre for Roman and Italian Legal Studies of CUPL.

More than 30 foreign experts and scholars from Italy, Russia, South Korea, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Serbia and other countries and regions, as well as over 100 domestic jurists and legal practitioners, were invited to explore the Civil Code for Future Common Law.

Prof. Fei Anling, Honourary Director of the Centre for Roman and Italian Legal Studies of CUPL & Head (Chinese side) of the Observatory on the Codification and Training of the Jurist in China in the Framework of the Roman Legal System, and Prof. Aldo Petrucci, Vice President of the University of Pisa, co-moderated the opening ceremony of the conference.

There was a minute of silence during the opening ceremony in memory of Professor Jiang Ping, Honorary Director of the Centre for Roman and Italian Legal Studies of CUPL. Afterwards, Director of the Observatory on the Codification and Training of the Jurist in China in the Framework of the Roman Legal System & Professor at the School of Law of the University of Rome "Tor Vergata" Sandro Schipani, Vice President and Secretary-General of China Civil Law Society Wang Yi, Deputy Director of the Civil Law Office of the Commission for Legislative Affairs of the National People's Congress of PRC Ma Zhengping, Vice President of CUPL Shi Jianzhong, Dean of the College of Comparative Law of CUPL Xie Zhiyong and Dean of the Civil, Commercial, and Economic Law School of CUPL Yu Fei gave their opening remarks respectively. In addition, the President Emeritus of the Constitutional Court of Italy & Dean of the School of Law of the University of Rome "La Sapienza" Cesare Mirabelli made written statements.

Later, the Italian Civil and Commercial Law Translation Series were introduced and then the keynote speeches began. Prof. Cui Jianyuan from the School of Law of Tsinghua University, Wang Yi, Prof. Xu Guodong from the Law School of Xiamen University, Prof. Huang Feng from the Law School of Beijing Normal University, Sandro Schipani, Prof. Angelo Luminoso from the Law School of University of Cagliari made thematic reports on the codification of civil law, the interaction between civil law and other branch laws, and the application of specific systems in civil law.

From the afternoon of 21 September to the morning of 22 September, four sub-seminars were held and the topics were "the general principles of the civil code and law", "the civil code and company law, environmental protection, public law and foreign law personnel training", "the civil code and creditor's rights" and "the civil code and legal acts, property rights and new challenges". Prof. Weng Wuyao delivered a speech on the topic "The Impact of the Civil Code on Tax Law Formulation and Application". Professor Yi Jun presented a speech titled "Judgment Criteria for the Invalidity of Contracts Violating Mandatory Provisions - Focusing on Article 16 of the Interpretation of the Civil Code". Prof. Yu Fei, Prof. Dai Mengyong and Prof. Liu Jia'an took part in the exchange and discussion by moderating sessions or being commentators.

Under the co-hosting of Schipani and Fei, on 22 September, closing remarks were delivered by Director of the Centre for Roman and Italian Legal Studies of CUPL Prof. Luo Zhimin, Director of the Centre for European and Asian Studies of University of Rome "Tor Vergata" Prof. Riccardo Cardilli and Prof. Antonio Saccoccio from the School of Law of the University of Rome "La Sapienza". Thus, the symposium came to a successful conclusion.

In addition, a new Youth Forum was set up at this symposium on the afternoon of 24 September, in which a total of 14 doctoral students and young lawyers delivered reports on their relevant research findings.
